Why is hardware support so poor on Linux?

Alise Rutgers: Given companies have a limited development budget, they tend to focus primary driver support on the platform that is likely to provide the most return on investment. Given Microsoft has the largest share of the home computer market, I think you can guess where most companies focus their driver development.

Davina Shindler: Linux is constantly improvingBut what are you talking about?Linux has more hardware support built into the kernel than Windows and OS X combined. Just because Linux doesn't support your hardware doesn't mean it has poor hardware support. I have to install about 5 3rd-party drivers just to get my hardware working correctly in Windows. In Linux, I only have to install one (Nvidia). And let's look at the architectures Linux supports:Intel x86Alpha AXPSun SPARCMotorola 68000PowerPCARMHitachi SuperHIBM S/390MIPSHP PA-RISCIntel IA-64AMD x86-64AXIS CRISRenesas M32RAtmel AVR32Renesas H8/300NEC V850Tensilica XtensaAnalog Devices Blackfin a! rchitecturesWindows only supports:Intel and AMD architecturesMac OS X only supports:Intel ArchitecturesPowerPCSo don't say Linux has poor hardware support.EDITOh you have changed my mind. You didn't give any proof or evidence, but I believe you.Linux has poor hardware support. Windows is superior. It isn't even debatable. You get what you pay for, right?...Show more

Coleman Coscia: It all depends on which Linux distro. you are working with.If you are working with Ubuntu or Linux Mint support is already vast.
