120x digital zoom and 10x optical zoom camcorder vs. 60x digital zoom and 60x optical zoom camcorder...?

Bryant Chaudhry: I would go for the second choice.Digital Zoom is like cropping a pic so you lose quality, but Optical Zoom actually moves the lenses in the Camera or Camcorder, which then you do not lose quality.

Bernie Cerra: Optical zoom uses the camcorder's lens to magnify part of the image without losing any image quality. Digital zoom is a method of decreasing (narrowing) the apparent angle of view of a digital photographic or video image. Digital zoom is accomplished by cropping an image down to a centered area with the same aspect ratio as the original, and usually also interpolating the result back up to the pixel dimensions of the original. It is accomplished electronically, without any adjustment of the camera's optics, and no optical resolution is gained in the process....Show more

Micah Schwarcz: Digital zoom is useless if you want clear image capture. It should never be used.In this case, that leaves optical zoom. While it is true that you will g! et better magnification with 60x optical zoom, it looks like you are comparing a high definition camcorder (10x zoom) to a standard definition camcorder (60x zoom).Since we don't know what you plan to capture to video, we don't know if having big zoom is that important. Image clarity (high definition wins), audio with a mic jack for external mic connection and manual audio control are equally important... as are big lenses and imaging chips (for good low light capture quality). And the video data file format (least compressed is best) is extremely important in order to maintain video image quality. The task is to weigh these and balance them when you find certain camcorders that meet the requirements - that fit your budget. Picking one capability on which to make your decision is not a good idea. You have not provided enough information for us to assist you....Show more

Armando Somes: If ALL other things are equal between the two cameras, the 60x optical is the winner. ! Optical zoom is the only "true" zoom, in which the lens eleme! nts actually move to magnify the light. Digital zoom is the camera's "guess" at what the image might look like if it was zoomed in. It essentially just takes the pixels in the image and makes them larger. You can do the same thing in editing software, and either way, it won't be clear. It'll be pixellated. I never even look at digital zoom when buying any kind of camera, since one of the first things I do when I turn it on for the first time is DISABLE the digital zoom so I don't accidentally use it. It's a non-factor for me. It doesn't exist. But if the 10x optical zoom camera has other features that are better than the 60x, it might be worth a look. You'd be surprised at how rarely you even need a zoom more than 10x, so other features might be more important. You have to do the full comparison. But strictly speaking of zoom, 60x optical is better than 10x optical. Don't even look at the digital part....Show more
