Elementary or Secondary Education?

Teodoro Lamond: i am working on my AA in elementary education with an emphasis in early childhood. i started with that and im almost done but discovered that i really love the early childhood years. im currently volunteering at a preschool for my field experience and have worked with the toddlers (dont do it...not fun) i love pre-k but i wouldnt teach any higher than 1st grade

Jorge Gerrero: I have taught both and know that either way, you can't lose out. Older students offer the opportunity to develop some really in-depth discussions. They also need to see how the topic is truly valid to the world they live in. They will tune you out very quickly if you don't make this connection for them. For example, why read a certain story? What can they learn from it that will affect their lives today? For younger students, you have the opportunity to create an excitement for becoming life-long learners. Fifth grade is an excellent grade for American literature, as they study ! American history in that grade. Younger students don't have the immediate need to see how the topic of study is going to directly affect their lives, but you do have the obligation to get them interested in learning in general. Good luck with your choice!...Show more

Dee Depung: It all depends on which level of education and students you want to work with.I have found it rewarding working with high school students, yet I also like younger students. In any event, there will be achievers and non-achievers. The rewarding part is when you get thru the students that "need direction" and you can help them....Show more

German Thal: I think elementary would be a good place to start since you are quite young. You can always move onto secondary schools later if you become restless with younger children.
